Before I get started on today’s blog, I think it is best to have a basic understanding of the definition of consciousness. This definition is according to esoteric psychology as taught by Torkom Saraydarian: “Consciousness is the soul’s light or radiation. It is an accumulation of light around your head that can penetrate many miles and be amplified through them.”
Observation tells us that a negative state of consciousness sees only the dark side of things. And this state of consciousness, as it grows, can easily become obsessive and fanatical. Having a negative state of consciousness causes a person to only see things that are ugly, failing and unstable. He only sees defeat, and in the end, affects the local and global environment in the most insidious ways. It has become a contagious disease, causing many to lose hope and vision for their future.
Then there is the person who has an opposite state of consciousness, the “all is good” consciousness. This kind of person is as dangerous as the “all is bad” person. “All is good” people can be trapped in terrific miseries until eventually they realize the realities of life. And I believe that the “all is bad” thinking person destroys his or her chances to be someone or something better.
A healthy person has principles, ethics, and measures by which he senses, by which he can distinguish a dark heart from a heart that is alive with hope, vision, and beauty; that can recognize ugliness from beauty.
A positive person is one who has the conviction that beauty, light, and love eventually will be the most desirable goals.
Okay, let’s say that you yourself have, or you know someone close to you who has a negative consciousness. How do you know? To have a negative consciousness describes a person that only sees grammatical mistakes in your writings, weaknesses in your verbal communications, and hidden agendas in your behaviors.
For example, grammatical mistakes: Some time ago I wrote what I thought was a beautiful article on esoteric astrology. I was aware such information was not well known to the spiritual community and so I wanted to share the information. And I did, sending the report to my spiritual mentor, who was also a published author. He returned the article and told me to have it printed in Meditation Monthly International. So I did but only after the magazine’s editor took a look at it.
A few days after the article was published, a co-worker sent a “corrected version” of the article to me in the mail. She had decided to edit the article herself…making countless red markings, correcting what she considered grammatical errors. (This reminded me of olden days when grammar teachers would “red letter” student’s papers.) The “red letter” person’s negative consciousness affected my writing for the next few months; but rather than to defeat me, I tried hard to take something good from it. I bought several books on grammar and learned a lot, including the fact that I should trust the magazine’s editor who was up-to-the-minute on the rules of grammar. This was an example of a person, who well intended, had a negative consciousness.

One who has a negative consciousness has no appreciation for the service you render, for the love you have, or for the gratitude you feel toward him. He always finds something to negate your opinions, actions, or plans. If you do something useful for others, he tries to see a wrong motive behind your action.
One day a mother, trying to give encouragement to her son and daughter-in-law sent them what she thought to be a letter of love. The couple were struggling with things in their married life and really down on their “luck.” It took her an hour to make sure everything in her letter was worded with love and care and concerns in such a way that it would lift their spirits. The son was responsive in the positive to the letter. The wife was not…she saw only the worst in the letter and told her husband’s mother she never wanted to see her again.
For the son, the letter was beautiful and uplifting for him. For the daughter-in-law there was no appreciation coming from her; she had found nothing but negation of all the good written in the letter. The daughter-in-law was only concentrating upon all that she thought was ugly, wrong, short, condemning, unloving and so on.
The wife’s negative consciousness was blocking the psychic energy, the life-giving energy circulating within her system and gradually poisoning herself and the marriage. She could not see the good in the letter nor the good in her husband or yes, even the good in herself.
Negativity destroys such a person’s true identity. To feel that they have an identity, they always attack others to feel that they exist and that they are superior. They feel superior if they make others inferior.
It is important to identify a negative consciousness and not to allow it to poison your own beingness. When we become poisoned by the negative consciousness of someone close to us, it dims our light and can ultimately turn us against the beauty of life. There is no transformation in a negative consciousness.
May the light of love guide our consciousness; always.
Love,
Joleen
Dear Joleen, It is so true what you say, that a negative state of consciousness as it grows can easily become obsessive and fanatical. BTDT, and for me it takes continual observation for awareness, and spiritual practice for realignment, to stay out those traps of negative mind such as fears, worries, and overall absorption of the surrounding energy at times. Once during a meditation it was so cool what given to me as a visual impression. It was brief, but I saw a separation, looking down at some of the thought forms in my community that I feel in daily life, and seeing space above them. The question raised to me was “Why are you looking there?”. Indicating why was I tuning into the thoughts around me rather than concentrating on the inspiring and guiding energy above me? I also want to say that this informational blog is strengthening and appreciated. ‘And the graphics are so inspiring and beautiful. ((( Thank you ))) Love, Bonnie
Dear Bonnie,
Thank you for your informative response. And also your appreciation. There are so many folks subscribed to the forum that are unknown to me. Hopefully your response and Ginette’s response will encourage more of our friends, known and unknown to share their ideas and experiences as well.
In reading about your meditation, it surely does remind us all of the importance of looking in the right places. This is what healthy people do…they look for things in others to appreciate, to respect, to encourage and yes, even to protect. For example one day I was given an image for a WMEA Center – the image was of a geodesic dome. I was so excited and called members of the WMEA group to an impromptu meeting to share the image and talk about possibilities. There was one person who attended the meeting who assured us we would never have our own property and how wrong it was for me to encourage the idea. She was very discouraging. So I began to focus on those who were excited and positive about the “given image.” Then I told everyone at the meeting that we would also have a Center that we would not only own, but would be debt free. Then a few more thought I was nuts. But I paid no attention to their doubting nature for I know that in Hierarchy all things are possible. And now, today, we have our debt-free Center on two acres of land that is so very beautiful. And those who had the doubt gradually disappeared from the Path.
Warm wishes,
Joleen
Thanks Joleen,
I was very close to two people like that. Truly sad, because both really had a lot to be grateful for, health, family, everything. But it just seemed that they would not allow themselves to have gratitude, which then would not open the door to being joyful. At different times I asked them to make a list of all the wonderful things in their lives and not once would they do it. This of course, made them see the negative in others and their job to pass it on and bring them down too. To deprive oneself of the energy of joy and gratitude is like feeding oneself poison every day and living with the illness as a normal way of life.
Dear Ginette – thank you for your response. I really enjoy hearing from the peoplewho are subscribed to the Blog, for often times their responses give us new points of view to consider, views that enrich our consciousness.
Negativity is a disease that starts very slowly, remaining, most of the time, unnoticeable. But those around and about us soon become uneasy and eventually begin to pull away. Or, they move under the “spell” of the negative thinking person. What is ironic is that sometimes people call us negative if we do not fall into their path of thinking, feeling and this and that.
I recently watched a film on PBS Independent Lens, “Half the Sky–A Path Appears.” Maybe some of you have seen it. One particular film covered one of Kenya’s largest slums in Kibera. Living conditions there are unthinkable to most in the USA. A young female college graduate from the states arrived in Kibera to volunteer and she was met by a young Kenyan man by the name of Kennedy. (In addition to this story these two people “fell in love” with one another upon their first meeting) Now, Kennedy is what one may call a “total optimist.” He see’s the possibility in people and even in the most dyer situations. With his joyful laugh, his bright & clear mind and endless service to his community (after receiving his college education in the states he returned to the slums to serve) he appears to be a light within a greater light. One of his comments was, “Everyone everywhere can achieve a dream.” After watching this film I thought to myself, what feeds this human being? His magnetism was contagious & beautiful.
Then I recalled Joleen’s blog about negativity and what was written about a positive person, “A positive person is one who has the conviction that beauty, light, and love eventually will be the most desirable goals.” That beauty, light and goodness always prevail even in the darkest of places and conditions. While the darkness is always there trying to lull us into it’s grasp, it becomes less and less an influence were principles and a sense of future are present.
I feel so much better when I am in healthy environments & surrounded by friends, family and coworkers who share a hopeful view of life and living. Associating with those who may not share in this state of mind reminds me to observe my own thoughts and attitudes that may arise out of this negativity and ask, “is this mine or someones else’s?” Because, thanks to the Teachings, we know the effects and quite frankly to me they are alarming.
