The way to humility is not achieved through denying the existence of these memories, but by using such memories as tools or materials:

-to use such memories as fuel to deepen our aspirations

-to see how cause and effect travel on the path of our life

It is through meditation that all negative memories of these experiences are gradually drawn to the surface and then used for the service of life.

Nature helps us to forget many past memories. Even the subconscious mind throws them out and makes them vanish, but the permanent atoms keep the records. Such records can be annihilated as our True Self, the Divine Self unfolds within our nature.

Spiritual independence is a goal; it is something most of us are working toward, or desiring, once we know it is possible.

To be spiritually independent means, in part, to do our best to be independent from the limitations we have in our personality life, for example, freeing ourselves from negative emotions. There are a myriad of others things as well, of course, but this is a big one.

When you become spiritually independent you are going to be a soul lighting the way. Soul independence is an urge in you, in me, in the soul of every person, to be free and to prevent any imposition of the will upon our life.

The White Mountain Education Association (WMEA) has a prisoner’s outreach program – a study program, which includes men and women from prisons all over the United States. To be independent we must become substantially free from our personality limitations. However, it is in being independent that we learn how to be interdependent, how to cooperate, and eventually reach a point of harmony and balance within ourselves and with Life itself.

Spiritual independence is when you have the ability to prevent any imposition of the will from others upon yourself, your group, as well as from the limitations of your personality nature. We must be careful that others do not impose their will upon us.

So now that we understand, at least in part, what spiritual independence is, we should keep in mind there is also a wrong independence. For example, arrogance; arrogance is an urge to be independent. But being spiritually independent has nothing to do with arrogance. In independence we try to manifest the beauty that is within us without letting other people hinder the process of manifesting our beauty. If we understand that, it will be an important step on the path of our soul, do you see?

Now comes the critical point of spiritual independence…”when we ourselves are walking on the path of independence, we must let other people be independent and we must not impose our own will upon them. Anytime we violate the independence of other people, we impose our image upon them and we do not let them manifest their own original beauty.

You may already be feeling this—Mercury is slowing to its station direct in early Aquarius. This is exact at 7:57 am MST tomorrow, Wednesday, Feb. 11. Mercury turned to retrograde motion on Jan. 21, right after the Aquarius New Moon. Mercury is stationing direct while in a conjunction to the brightest asteroid[1], Vesta.

As the next few days progress, I suggest you take things one step at a time, check your facts, and not make any promises. Mercury stationing has a precarious effect, and it’s very difficult to predict the influence that it will have. The most noticeable energy to work with at the time of a Mercury station is that of reversal.

You may also find yourself having an opinion contrary to that of your family or of a group. So if this is the situation, choose your points well always backing your points with facts and experience. You may not be able to change the beliefs of some in the family or group, but at least they will know your point of view. This is highlighted by Mercury retrograde making a conjunction to Vesta back on Feb 5th and with a second one coming on March 4 when Mercury is in direct motion. Vesta holds space for what you might think of as rituals — a clear space where something can come through. This is not necessarily ritual in the formal sense but rather that of opening yourself up to new experience in a conscious way.

Mercury retrograde can dredge up events and revelations from the past. This week there were two of them.

Before I get started on today’s blog, I think it is best to have a basic understanding of the definition of consciousness. This definition is according to esoteric psychology as taught by Torkom Saraydarian: “Consciousness is the soul’s light or radiation. It is an accumulation of light around your head that can penetrate many miles and be amplified through them.”

Observation tells us that a negative state of consciousness sees only the dark side of things. And this state of consciousness, as it grows, can easily become obsessive and fanatical. Having a negative state of consciousness causes a person to only see things that are ugly, failing and unstable. He only sees defeat, and in the end, affects the local and global environment in the most insidious ways. It has become a contagious disease, causing many to lose hope and vision for their future.

Then there is the person who has an opposite state of consciousness, the “all is good” consciousness. This kind of person is as dangerous as the “all is bad” person. “All is good” people can be trapped in terrific miseries until eventually they realize the realities of life. And I believe that the “all is bad” thinking person destroys his or her chances to be someone or something better.

A healthy person has principles, ethics, and measures by which he senses, by which he can distinguish a dark heart from a heart that is alive with hope, vision, and beauty; that can recognize ugliness from beauty.

A positive person is one who has the conviction that beauty, light, and love eventually will be the most desirable goals.

Okay, let’s say that you yourself have, or you know someone close to you who has a negative consciousness. How do you know? To have a negative consciousness describes a person that only sees grammatical mistakes in your writings, weaknesses in your verbal communications, and hidden agendas in your behaviors.

For example, grammatical mistakes: Some time ago I wrote what I thought was a beautiful article on esoteric astrology. I was aware such information was not well known to the spiritual community and so I wanted to share the information. And I did, sending the  report to my spiritual mentor, who was also a published author. He returned the article and told me to have it printed in Meditation Monthly International. So I did but only after the magazine’s editor took a look at it.

A few days after the article was published, a co-worker sent a “corrected version” of the article to me in the mail. She had decided to edit the article herself…making countless red markings, correcting what she considered grammatical errors. (This reminded me of olden days when grammar teachers would “red letter” student’s papers.) The “red letter” person’s negative consciousness affected my writing for the next few months; but rather than to defeat me, I tried hard to take something good from it. I bought several books on grammar and learned a lot, including the fact that I should trust the magazine’s editor who was up-to-the-minute on the rules of grammar. This was an example of a person, who well intended, had a negative consciousness.

The wife’s negative consciousness was blocking the psychic energy, the life-giving energy circulating within her system and gradually poisoning herself and the marriage. She could not see the good in the letter nor the good in her husband or yes, even the good in herself.

Negativity destroys such a person’s true identity. To feel that they have an identity, they always attack others to feel that they exist and that they are superior. They feel superior if they make others inferior.

It is important to identify a negative consciousness and not to allow it to poison your own beingness. When we become poisoned by the negative consciousness of someone close to us, it dims our light and can ultimately turn us against the beauty of life. There is no transformation in a negative consciousness.
